Die Passagen-Werk
title: Die Passagen-Werk
year: 2015
technique: pastels and biros on paper
dimensions: 12 cm x 10 cm each frame. Total: 27 frames
brief description: the work is dedicated to the legends that Walter Benjamin made up with pastels and black ink for his notebooks used in the creation of his monumental work dedicated to Paris: Passagen-Werk. Picking up on the order of Benjamin's legends, which are based on sequences of three coloured symbols, Die Passagen-Werk elaborates a small in-complete system (opus infectum) of repetition of Benjamin's small coloured symbols through sequences of three symbols per three horizontal rows. Each sequence of the three symbols per three rows (9 symbols in total) is grouped in a single beige frame, with three total rows of 9 frames, for a total of 27 frames. The three red frames, on the other hand, contain Benjamin's original legend, from which the sequences of the beige frames start. Each small coloured symbol in the sequences originally represented a chapter of Benjamin's volume or a topic to be treated in it.
